Background of the study:

Tourism in Ikogosi has emerged as a dynamic driver of economic activity, significantly affecting local craft industries. With the influx of tourists seeking unique cultural and artisanal experiences, local crafts have gained market visibility and commercial value (Oluwole, 2023; Adebisi, 2024). The interplay between tourism and craft production has led to increased demand for traditional artifacts, boosting income for local artisans and encouraging innovation in design. Recent studies have shown that tourism can foster economic diversification and community development by promoting indigenous crafts while preserving cultural heritage (Ayodele, 2024). However, there are challenges related to over-commercialization, quality control, and the sustainability of traditional production methods. This study appraises the impact of tourism on local craft industries in Ikogosi, examining how tourist demand influences production practices, income generation, and cultural preservation. Through a balanced analysis of opportunities and constraints, the research aims to provide recommendations for enhancing the symbiotic relationship between tourism and local crafts.

Statement of the problem:

While tourism presents significant opportunities for boosting local craft industries in Ikogosi, the sector faces challenges such as over-commercialization and quality inconsistencies. These issues threaten the sustainability of traditional craft production and may lead to the dilution of cultural authenticity. A comprehensive understanding of how tourism affects local artisans is needed to address these challenges and optimize the benefits for the community.

Objectives of the study:

1. To evaluate the economic impact of tourism on local craft industries.

2. To identify the challenges faced by local artisans due to increased tourist demand.

3. To propose strategies for sustainable integration of tourism and traditional craft production.

Research questions:

1. How does tourism influence the income of local craft industries in Ikogosi?

2. What challenges do local artisans face as a result of increased tourism?

3. What measures can ensure that tourism contributes positively to the sustainability of local crafts?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Tourism significantly increases the revenue of local craft industries.

2. Over-commercialization due to tourism negatively affects the quality and authenticity of local crafts.

3. Sustainable tourism practices can enhance the long-term viability of local craft industries.

Significance of the study:

This study is significant as it explores the relationship between tourism and local craft industries, providing insights that can help optimize economic benefits while preserving cultural heritage. The findings will guide policymakers, tourism boards, and artisans in fostering sustainable growth.

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is limited to the impact of tourism on local craft industries in Ikogosi, Ekiti West Local Government Area, Ekiti State and does not extend to other tourism-related sectors or regions.

Definitions of terms:

• Tourism: The activity of people traveling for leisure, business, or other purposes which stimulates local economies.

• Local craft industries: Businesses involved in the production of traditional, handmade artifacts.
